A BEGINNER’S MATERIAL GUIDE

A material with more than one form.

A practical introduction to agarwood wood chips, powder, oil and formulated incense — and why they should not be treated as interchangeable.

Start with the form.

Many misunderstandings begin with category names. “Oud” may be used for a raw material, an aromatic oil or a fragrance. “Incense” may mean loose wood for heating or a formulated stick. A useful question starts by separating these forms.

01

Wood chips and fragments

The place to begin with the material itself.

Agarwood is commonly discussed in pieces of resinous wood, often offered in different shapes and sizes. These pieces can be considered for heat-based aroma evaluation, as well as for incense-making or other material applications.

02

Powder: process matters

The same word can describe different materials.

“Agarwood powder” can refer to ground wood or to a material that has undergone extraction. Those are not interchangeable. Its processing stage, composition and intended application should be established before drawing conclusions from colour or aroma language.

03

Oil and aromatic preparations

A liquid’s colour is not its composition.

Distilled oil, a blended aromatic oil and a finished fragrance can all feature agarwood in their description while being fundamentally different products. Their composition, preparation and intended use need to be discussed in their own terms.

04

Formulated incense

More than wood in another shape.

Sticks, coils and cones may be formulations rather than pieces of raw wood. Ingredients, binders and the form of the finished product matter. The actual pack contents, dimensions and use guidance are part of understanding the item.
